Race is a way societies group people using ideas about ancestry and physical appearance. People made these categories; they do not divide humanity into separate kinds of people. The categories still have real effects because people and institutions can treat groups differently.1 Ethnicity is connected to shared culture, history, or ancestry. A person can identify with more than one ethnic group. Learning someone’s label does not tell us everything about that person.2

When a school or another uses a label to decide who gets an opportunity, the decision can have real . That is one reason to study who has . Still, a racial label does not tell us every person’s language, interests, or choices. Shared ways of living are parts of , and one person may belong to several communities. Studying groups should help us ask better questions about people, not replace getting to know them.
