We study identity, culture, belonging, and change through The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. We also build reading, vocabulary, discussion, and writing skills. Reading gives us details to think about. Vocabulary helps us understand those details. When we talk with other people, we can test an interpretation and notice something we missed.1 Writing makes us connect a claim to evidence and explain why it makes sense.2 Returning to our notes lets us see how our thinking has changed. These activities work together: each one gives the next one something useful.
